Why choose the Costa Brava area?

Lance Armstrong was one of the first to discover Girona as an attractive place for cycling. The by now not too popular ex-cyclist decided to buy a house in the old center of Girona and from there to prepare his Tour de France every year. Since then, more and more professional cyclists have bought their second home in the Girona area. In fact, it has become so popular that 65 professional cyclists already live there, including many Americans, English and Dutch. As a result, you now regularly see groups training from different (professional) teams such as Sky, Blanco and Garmin, with riders such as Leipheimer, Robert Gesink, Dennis van Winden, Christian van de Velde, David Millar.

Dutch champion Marianne Vos and her team have also been included Hotel Barcarola as 'second home'. The riders of Jumbo Visma also believe that the environment offers perfect training opportunities.

Cheap and fast journey
With RyanAir you fly cheaply from Eindhoven directly to Girona and with a van you can possibly transport the bicycles, it is 1400 km from the Netherlands (Utrecht). Transavia also flies regularly to Girona from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Girona (or Gerona) is half an hour from the hotel. Barcelona airport is approximately 5 minutes drive. Apart from KLM, Vueling also flies to Barcelona; they also offer cheaper flights.

Ideal climate
Little rain, sun, warm, but also not an extreme temperature difference with the Netherlands, such as in southern Spain where your body first has to get used to the difference. You have areas with frequent wind and areas with little wind.

Ideal training area
Well-paved roads, little traffic and all types of landscapes close together: flat, sloping coastal roads, hills, mountains and high mountains. And that which really distinguishes the surroundings of s'Agaro from other Spanish areas: many beautiful roads and therefore many routes; you can drive a completely different route every day for two weeks.

Cyclosports / Competitions
In Catalonia you have almost every weekend both a Cyclosportief and a cycling race (for all categories).

Bike rental

Hotel Barcarola arranges everything in the cycling area. You can rent the best of the best equipment, but you can also go for a good racing bike, depending on your budget. Please inform the hotel of your height and whether or not you want clickers on your pedals.

If you want to bring your own bike, that is of course also possible. In the Netherlands you can rent bicycle boxes for a few tens. Please note that you do have to check in extra luggage, which also costs a few tens and your bike will completely disassemble, which takes quite a bit of time.

If you decide to rent a bike, bring your own shoes and pedals.
